What is a floor plan for apartments?

A scaled diagram that shows the layout, room arrangement, and dimensions of an apartment unit, used to represent a specific unit type like a studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom.

A floor plan is a top-down diagram that maps out how rooms, hallways, and living spaces are arranged within an apartment unit. In Houston leasing, floor plans serve as the primary visual tool to show renters what a studio, one-bedroom-one-bathroom, two-bedroom-two-bathroom, or other configuration actually looks like before they visit in person.

Each floor plan is drawn to scale and typically includes labeled dimensions of rooms and total square footage for the unit. It shows where walls, doors, windows, closets, and major appliances sit relative to one another. For example, a floor plan clarifies whether the kitchen opens to the living area or remains separate, how many closets each bedroom has, or whether the unit includes a balcony or patio.

Property managers and leasing offices in the Houston market use floor plans as standard marketing materials on websites, leasing brochures, and in model units. They help prospective tenants understand the actual layout and size of different unit types offered at a complex, which is especially valuable when comparing similar configurations across different buildings. Floor plans also set clear expectations about usable space and furniture placement, reducing surprises at lease signing.
